PLN`s
PLN I had no clue at first what a PLN was but it makes sense after reading the information. I have searched the internet in the past prior to this to pick up chords or words to songs to practice them if I was interested in a particular song. A PLN would be useful in this instance to connect with sites or people to enhance your interest or gain knowledge with like minded people to find out the easiest format in which to practice a song or to become more proficient at playing it. I can also see the value in business related fields in order to share ideas or thoughts for the betterment of the overall understanding of those involved in contributing to the process. In most applications I have been or could be classified as a lurker. I come and go picking up bits and pieces of information I find useful that I can implement in my everyday activities in areas of interest to me.

I find the concept of the lurker interesting. If you were sitting in a room of people watching them interact, such as at an airport, no one would call you a lurker. Yet, people post things on the Internet knowing someone will look at it. What's funny, too me at least, is that if those same people don't feel they are getting the feedback they expect, it almost seems narcissistic to me. It's almost "Here, look at me, minions, respond to me you must." Do they demand people acknowledge them every time they walk down the street? My rant for the day.
ReplyDeleteAside from that, clearly you can develop information from multiple sources through a PLN.
I do not take it as a rant, you have a valid point in which to view why some of these people blog in the first place. Especially if they have no established PLN for continued growth and lifelong learning ambitions. It could have something to do with the comment Andy Warhol made in regards to everyone wants and tries to get their 10 minutes of fame somehow.
DeleteTrue enough.
DeleteI agree with both of you. The lurker is an interesting title.
ReplyDeleteOkay, okay... yes, I am starting my PLN. I realized that I have already started subscribing to a few sites and received updates monthly or quarterly. I now think I understand what the "hype" is all about. It is not a gimmick, it truly does help to connect with others online. The RSS is also new to me and I am excited about it. The video had a great analagy to introduce it. It makes sense to me. Knowledge is starting to creep in.
Greetings David,
ReplyDeleteYou might find it comforting that 'lurking' is far and away the default mode of most folks consuming content from the Internet. =)
I think it's great that you've found enthusiasm early on with these tech tools and resources right off the bat!
I'm curious what business related fields and/or applications you've thought of that could be related to PLNs?
RD as I have streamlined my connections I have found content specific sights that are very useful for the HVAC field. Such as Organizations like ACCA, RSES, HVAC EXcellence and ASHRAE. Within these are forums where subject matter experts share teaching, presentation and curriculum content. The last two conferences I attended also give me some face encounters where identification can also be reinforced, with alot of the people I write or respond to on a regular basis. We constantly share ideas and information.
